The Perils of AI: How Overreliance Leads to Potential Danger

AI technology became hype over the past few years to complement human shortcomings. From written compositions to driving assistance, AI features have indeed helped humans to thrive in a competitive world. However, as more people use such technology, it somehow poses a threat to humanity as it might replace human endeavors. Accordingly, experts believe that AI might exceed humans in sophisticated critical thinking for decision-making. Our dependence on AI technology could endanger us when we’re too confident with its functions.

There have been ongoing debates about how AI technology can negatively affect the future of humanity. According to the speaker about AI and the Future of Humanity, AI tools are gaining mastery of language, the main tool for giving instructions or for learning. The speaker stated that AI hacked the operating system of human civilization, which affected fields beyond science.

According to an article from Foreign Policy, supercomputers that may suddenly find little need for humans are deeply concerning. It’s also stated that there will be growing unemployment rates as people increase their dependence on AI technology. Another issue raised in the article is the disturbing ways AI imitates and shares texts, speeches, and videos. With such capabilities, it has the potential to spread misinterpretation and false information.

One area where the impact of cutting-edge technologies like AI is particularly significant is in the driving experience. Due to its ability to give drivers a sense of convenience and safety on the road, AI dash cameras are becoming quite popular. This AI technology can collect crucial information to alert drivers of potential collisions and capture road incidents for evidence. However, because drivers can become unduly reliant on these cameras, experts caution against their use.

Case Scenario #1: Over Dependence on AI Technology

Imagine a scenario in which a driver completely relies on their dash camera, which results in a serious collision. The driver becomes inattentive to their surroundings on the road since they are confident that their AI dash camera can detect any approaching impediments. In this case, the driver subconsciously permits the AI system to take over, which increases the risks on the road.

Additionally, a lot of drivers only watch AI dash camera footage after an accident. As a result, there’s a higher possibility of human error in judgment which can result in a serious mishap. Drivers who rely too much on AI dash cameras may fail to observe important traffic laws and safety precautions that the camera may have missed. AI dash cameras may give a sense of security, but safe driving habits and driver awareness will always be preferable. The sole purpose of an AI dash camera is to assist in driving for increased driver and vehicle safety. It's critical to keep in mind that the driver has primary responsibility for the safety on the road.

Case Scenario #2: Technical Glitches

The second possibility is concerned with the technological unreliability of AI dash cameras. Although AI dash cameras are advertised as offering real-time monitoring, this isn’t usually the case in practice. AI dash cameras may have bugs that lead to erroneous and possibly harmful outcomes, just like any other technology. False positives or negatives are just one example of such errors, which could be disastrous if they occur while driving.

Let's say the AI dash camera is unable to identify an obstruction in its line of sight. In this scenario, the driver becomes upset because they mistakenly believe their vehicle can navigate the obstacle when, in fact, it is headed straight for them. It's also possible that the AI dash camera will mistakenly identify objects that aren't there. In either situation, a driver's poor choices could result in a tragic collision.

AI dash cameras were invented and are continuously being developed to assist people in a safer driving experience. Unless you’re confident that an AI system can drive for you, like Tesla, you might want to invest in such technology. But again, AI is far from perfect as there were road cases that driver-assist systems were involved in crashes. This indicates that people cannot fully rely on AI technology to drive for them. To ensure a safer driving experience, one should instead combine this technology with sensible driving habits, attention, and adherence to traffic laws. Both humans and AI technology are imperfect, but as the saying goes, two heads are better than one.

AI technology plays a crucial role in supporting various aspects of human life. However, our dependence on AI technology could endanger us if we overuse it for convenience. People must keep in mind that AI technology simply exists to assist humans in their activities, not to replace them. Thus, these tools should be used prudently but shouldn't solely be relied on. After all, AI systems are simply programmed to imitate human intelligence and can never exceed the human mind.
